Rodney Tafoya was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, whereas the youngest of five siblings he immediately took a liking to baseball. Older brother Jack stressed that Rodney should one use his left hand, leading this new “southpaw” on to what became an interesting diamond career.
“I was a huge follower of my new passion with the game, as a baseball card collector and my new idol in Nolan Ryan, a right-handed flame thrower, as his poster adorned my wall in my room. Rodney’s success on the mound began in Little League, continued through high school and college, and then into the professional ranks.
While playing for Newman University in Kansas, he became confident his career would continue on the diamond, but he made sure he satisfied a promise he’d made to his father to secure a college diploma.
“I never looked back, only looking forward to what was next in a line of baseball opportunities that I had worked so hard in my young life for,” Tafoya said. “During the next decade, the game propelled me to travel and dream of new experiences and opportunities with stops in Canada, a return to Mexico, and yet more extensive traveling, with a job in baseball as a scout and a no end in sight, as I thought my career would never end.”
